In the Spring Festival of the chinese lunar calendar in 2024, the drilling of the Tarim Deep Tower Science-1 Well in china National Petroleum Corporation reached a depth of 9,850 meters underground, setting a new Asian record for the deepest well. The BG155V high-strength and high-toughness oil casing provided by Baosteel will help the well achieve a depth of over 10,000 meters, becoming the second land well with a vertical depth exceeding 10,000 meters in the world. This marks a breakthrough in the research and development of high-strength and high-toughness oil casing by Baosteel and the iterative upgrade of materials.

Lu Xiaqing, chief engineer of product design technology in the Tube & Bar Business Unit of Baosteel, said, “As the largest steel integrated enterprise in China, Baosteel participated in the well drilling plan demonstration, well structure design, and casing material selection from the beginning of this 10,000-meter well. Although Baosteel’s oil casing products have been successfully applied in more than 100 deep wells with a depth of less than 8,000 meters in the Tarim Basin and the Sichuan Basin, it is the first time to be used in a 10,000-meter deep well.”

With the increasing demand for economic development and energy security in China, deep underground oil and gas resources have gradually become the development targets. The Tarim Basin is the largest onshore oil and gas basin in China, with abundant ultra-deep oil and gas resources, but they are generally buried deep. The ultra-deep oil and gas resources account for about 19% of the global total, making it the main battlefield to ensure national energy security and strengthen scientific and technological innovation in the exploration and development of deep oil and gas.

The depth of an oil and gas well is closely related to the temperature and pressure of the environment. To achieve deep well drilling of 10,000 meters, the casing must withstand severe working conditions such as high temperature and high pressure. Therefore, it is necessary to upgrade and iterate the conventional casing and develop high-strength and high-toughness oil casing that can withstand high temperature and high pressure. “Exploring the sky, exploring the earth, exploring the sea, and climbing the pole” are the four great feats of human beings to understand and challenge nature. Continental scientific drilling is the only means to obtain physical information underground, and its difficulty is no less than that of space exploration.

Zhang Zhonghua, chief scientist of Baowu, and chief researcher of the Central Research Institute (Technology Center), said, “The ultra-high temperature and ultra-high pressure in the underground of the 10,000-meter deep well pose extremely requirements on the quality and performance of steel pipe products. There are no similar products available for reference internationally. Through cooperation with universities and other research institutions, Baosteel has developed the world’s first set of online controlled cooling equipment for seamless steel pipes and key core technologies, ensuring the safe use of products under ultra-high temperature and high pressure as well as in complex geological conditions. At the same time, it has also greatly promoted the technological leadership and of green and efficient manufacturing of hot-rolled seamless steel pipes in China and the continuous iterative upgrade of products.”

Facing the extremely complex geological structure and casing service conditions of the Tarim Basin, below 10,000 meters underground, Baosteel has established a production, sales, research, and integration team and started the independent research and development of BG155V high-strength and high-toughness oil casing in 2020. They have overcome difficulties such as dimensional accuracy, physicochemical properties, and special joints, forming a stable and reliable production and manufacturing technology for the entire process. They have completed product trial production, on-site certification, product launches, and other work successively. Finally, on the basis of conducting hundreds of rigorous tests, they have developed the currently highest-strength and high-toughness non-standard casing in China.

To ensure the absolute safety of the use of 10,000-meter well casing, Baosteel has specifically established a leadership group, with the heads of production and quality in charge and the main leaders of each production line serving as deputy group leaders. At the same time, the team has formulated a special production process card, with 100% inspection of each parameter and 10% final product sampling.
